How do I know I'm
getting the right hip replacement ?
Your surgeon, who will know the best treatment for you, should make the choice of hip replacement. However, his/her choice may be limited as reductions in healthcare spending have meant that cost as well as patient benefits are considered. This could mean that cheaper, metal on polyethylene bearings are preferred. Ask your surgeon about the differences between "hard on soft" and "hard on hard" bearings and whether ceramic materials will help you. Alumina and zirconia ceramic implants vary according to the manufacturer. Be sure to ask your surgeon for material and product specifications which show that you have the best products available. Don't be afraid to ask for a different ceramic head or cup insert for the hip replacement recommended by your surgeon.
