Ceramic materials have been used successfully in hip replacement bearings for over 25 years. Two solutions exist to minimise polyethylene wear compared to metal on polyethylene systems. These are ceramic on polyethylene and ceramic on ceramic.

HIP Vitox ® alumina and Zyranox ® zirconia femoral heads are available for hip replacements which use a polyethylene cup. Zirconia offers greater design flexibility for smaller diameter and longer neck length heads.

HIP Vitox ® alumina femoral heads and cup inserts are available for ceramic on ceramic bearings.
